'The Hurricane Deck' is a phrase that comes with two meanings:
The first, and better known, is the upper observation deck on the big, steaming riverboats which once traveled the great rivers. The second is really a play on the first, and is the one from which came the title of this blog - and the upcoming podcast - that we truly love, for the picture it paints of wildness, honesty, freedom and perseverance. And life.
It's from a book, more than a century old, by Charles Siringo. A first-person account of the cattle drives of the old west; it's a tale of danger, companionship and grit, called "A Texas Cowboy".
But it's the subtitle that suggests a life lived with courage - often alone - yet one that is as singular of purpose as it is crowded with adventure:
"Fifteen Years on the Hurricane Deck of a Spanish Pony".
We are so glad you're here.
